Cryolipolysis (Fat Freezing)

Commonly referred to as “fat freezing” by patients is a nonsurgical fat reduction procedure. It uses cold temperature to reduce fat deposits in certain areas of the body. The procedure is designed to reduce localized fat deposits or bulges that do not respond to diet and exercise. The fat cells are particularly susceptible to the effects of cold, unlike other types of cells. While the fat cells freeze, the skin and other structures are spared from injury.

What areas of the body can be treated with cryolipolysis?

The Food and Drug Administration has approved cryolipolysis to treat fat deposits beneath the chin, upper arms, inner and outer thighs, abdomen, hip/flank (“love handles”), upper back (“brassiere rolls”), lower back, and underneath the buttocks.

How is cryolipolysis performed?

The area, size and shape of the fat deposit is assessed and number of treatments are recommended. Patients are awake during the procedure.

A device called an applicator is used to freeze the layer of fat cells underneath the skin. A gel pad is applied to the area to protect the skin before applicator is applied. Next, the fatty bulge is vacuumed into the applicator’s opening. You will feel a pulling sensation as suction is applied. These sensations, intense cold plus other possible sensations – tingling, stinging, aching, – lessen after 5 to 10 minutes as the area becomes numb during the cooling down process. The fat layer is gradually cooled to the target temperature of between 30.2 and 39.2 degrees Fahrenheit.

It takes usually 30-40 minutes to treat an area. After the area is treated, the applicator is removed. The area is massaged for 2 to 3 minutes to assist with the breakdown of the fat cells.

How are fat cells destroyed?

The technique is based on the finding that fat cells are more susceptible to damage from cold temperatures than other cells, such as skin cells. The cold temperature injures the fat cells. The injury triggers an inflammatory response by the body, which results in the death of the fat cells.

How much localized fat can one expect to lose from cryolipolysis?

Studies have shown an average fat reduction of between 15 and 28 percent at around 4 months after initial treatment. However, you may begin to notice changes as early as 3 weeks after treatment.

Dermaplane

Dermaplaning is an exfoliative technique that superficially “shaves” the surface of skin. This safe and effective method exfoliates the surface of
skin and removes fine hairs that tend to trap dirt and oil.

Dysport

Dysport is FDA approved (abobotulinumtoxinA) for treatment of moderate to severe facial lines and wrinkles. Dysport is injected into muscles to temporarily block nerve impulses to the injected muscles. This reduces muscle activity and leads to a reduction of the wrinkles caused by muscle contraction. Majority of patients see improvement in just 2-3 days after treatment and may last up to four months.

Extractions

An extraction treatment is the process of clearing a clogged or compacted pore by manual or mechanical means. Comedones (blackheads) are the most common reason for extraction. Pustules and pimples can also be extracted, depending on their size and depth. This often requires the use of a lancet to gently lift and remove the very top layer of the pustule to allow the contents to be easily extracted.

Hydrafacial Signature Treatment

The HydraFacialT treatment is the newest advance in non-laser skin resurfacing. HydraFacial is the only hydradermabrasion procedure that combines cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, hydration and antioxidant protection simultaneously, resulting in clearer, more beautiful skin with no discomfort or downtime. The treatment is soothing, moisturizing, non-invasive and non-irritating.

The HydraFacialT treatment improves the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, congested and enlarged pores, oily or acne-prone skin, hyperpigmentation and brown spots.

Micro Needling – Eclipse MicroPen® Elite

Microneedling helps with the reduction in the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, improved skin tone and texture and softer, younger-looking skin with fewer signs of aging. Microneedling can help improve the appearance of hyper-pigmentation as well as uneven skin tone and acne scars.

Automated micro-needling (also known as collagen induction therapy or CIT) is a new innovation in aesthetic medicine that can help treat the appearance of fine lines, acne scars, stretch marks and the skin’s overall appearance. During this procedure, the Eclipse MicroPen® is used to create controlled micro-injuries to the skin in order to produce collagen and elastin. Automated micro-needling also creates superficial micro-channels which can be used with topical gels, creams and serums to help improve the appearance of the skin.

Eclipse MicroPen® can be used on all parts of the body; face, neck, decollete, arms, hands, legs, abdomen and back. Some patients only require a single treatment, once per year to achieve optimal results. However, it is recommended for most patients to receive a series of 2-3 treatments spaced about 6-8 weeks apart. For patients with deep wrinkles, advanced photo-aging, stretch marks or acne scars, your skin care provider may recommend 6-8 sessions at 6 week intervals.
