It’s easy to spend a fortune on cosmetics and other high-quality skincare products in hopes of achieving a good complexion. However, many people fail to realize that healthy, radiant skin starts with a good skincare routine. The food you put in your body and how often you wash your face are the key ingredients to achieving your dream complexion.
Here are 4 healthy skin habits you should practice daily to achieve healthy, glowing skin:
Drink Plenty of Water
Just like any other cell in the body, skin cells are made up of water. Without water, the skin won’t be able to function properly or at its best. When you are not consuming enough water, the lack of hydration may present itself by turning your skin dry and dull. One study even revealed that drinking water can increase blood flow to the skin, which gives it an even tone. You should aim to drink eight 8-ounce cups of water a day.
Apply Sunscreen Daily
Wearing sunscreen is one of the best ways to protect your skin from sun damage, skin cancer and premature aging. Sunscreen is designed to protect your skin in the sun by filtering out harmful ultraviolet radiation.
At ForCare Medical Center, we encourage patients to use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 daily all year round (SPF 30 during summer months or greater sun exposure) to all exposed skin 30 minutes before sun exposure. We also recommend you limit your time in the sun and seek shade between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun’s rays are most intense.
Cleanse Before Bed
Whether you are coming home from a long day at the office or had one too many cocktails, it can be difficult to get the energy to wash your face before burying yourself in bed. However, this pre-bedtime routine is essential to helping you reach beautiful, radiant skin. Cleansing your face before bed can help reduce breakouts, prevent wrinkles, and avert eye infections.
The surface of your skin builds up dirt, oil, bacteria, sweat, and other debris throughout the day. When you cleanse your face, you can remove the mixture of grime and get your “canvas” ready for whatever nighttime products you use, whether that be moisturizer, eye cream or toner.
Eat a Balanced Diet
Eating a healthy, balanced diet doesn’t just benefit your body, it can also benefit your skin. You can treat your skin kindly by eating antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables and healthy fats from nuts or oily fish. These foods contain beta carotene, vitamins C and E, zinc and selenium, which are crucial for radiant, healthy skin.
